IPA guide

Genetically modified organisms have had their DNA altered by scientists. Farmers often plant genetically modified crops that require less water or are more resistant to pests.

Genetically modified foods sound like something from science fiction, but they're actually very common. Modifying or changing the genetic makeup of crops can lead to fruits and vegetables that last longer, resist disease, are seedless, or taste sweeter. Though most scientists agree that genetically modified crops are safe for humans to eat, there are some consumers who avoid foods that have had their genes altered, believing there may be long-term health risks.
